Glorious Discussions Concerning Interactive Entertainment: Photopia

May 27, 2011

Well, I’m a little off the ball getting this one out, but we’re still on schedule for the next GDCIE. I’m perfectly willing to deprive myself of sleep to lessen the amount of time people spend unable to play the next discussion game. That’s how much I love you all. In case you’re wondering, the next GDCIE will be Thursday June 2, 2011 at 6:00pm in MC4059 MC2034. We will be discussing:

Photopia, by Adam Cadre

It’s more interactive fiction this week. It’s also a bit of an older game, so apologies if we’re not being contemporary enough for your tastes. It maybe took me an hour to play through once (because some people mentioned that having estimated play times is nice).

If you’re looking for a, maybe more traditional, puzzle oriented interactive fiction game you might give Dreamhold a try. Part of its goal is to act as a tutorial of sorts to new players of interactive fiction (though Photopia is certainly not very complicated if you’re only looking to play that). I think it took about three hours for me to play through, without really trying to solve any of the extra, non-story puzzles. Unless enough people play Dreamhold and really want to talk about it this won’t be a topic of our next discussion.

If you’re tired of only talking about reasonably obscure indie titles for the discussions, we’ve got you covered. As was suggested, we’ll be including a bigger, more commercial game in the GDCIE this term. For the first discussion of July, which will be the 7th, we will be discussing Half-Life 2. If you own it, and want to talk about it, give it a replay in the next month. If you don’t own it and want to get in on this, there may be members with extra copies of the game on Steam that they wouldn’t mind gifting to you (why don’t they speak up in the comments and volunteer?).

Nothing left to say,
Jonathan Semple

ps. Because no one yelled at me, the GDCIE will be on Thrusdays at 6:00pm for the rest of the term.

I happen to have a couple of extra copies of Half-Life 2 on Steam. Kindly poke me at one of our GDCIEs with your Steam handle and it shall be yours.
