Community Jam at 7:00!

July 22, 2011 Comments off

It’s here, it’s here! Today we’re starting! We’ll be making a game together, starting tonight and lasting the weekend, for our Community Jam. We’re going to be in SLC room 2109 (take the staircase between Timmies and the Bomber.  It’s the 1st door on the right). The room is a little hidden so we can meet up at 7:00pm on the couches in front of the Turnkey and head over (though for those who show up late, the room isn’t too hard to find). Hope to see you out there! (and execs don’t forget to come up with a few good themes!)

UW-GDC Community Jam!

July 17, 2011 Comments off

The UW Game Development Club is proud to present the first ever Community Jam! We’re getting together next weekend and all, as a club, building one game together, based on a central theme. We think this is the term to host this type of event, since there are only a few of us here and it won’t be super crazy to organize.

How will we pick the theme? What role can I fill? When will this thing start?! That’s part of what we’ll be discussing at this week’s GDCIE (tomorrow at 6:00pm in MC4059) to hopefully schedule it so that everyone can come.

If you can’t attend the GDCIE tomorrow but are still interested in this Community Jam, leave a comment telling us your thoughts about this whole business. But please do try to attend the meeting tomorrow, since compromises are much better achieved in person.

Cheers,
Sherban

Interactive Storytelling Writeathon

March 23, 2011 Comments off

Hey everyone!

Do you like games with a strong story – Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Bioshock and the like? Have you ever thought about being a writer for games?  Narrative design is a rapidly growing aspect of game development and writing non-linear and interactive stories is a challenging but very fun experience. Thus, next Saturday, April 2nd – two days after next Thursday’s talk on time management – we will be holding our first narrative-related event: the Interactive Storytelling Writeathon.

Come out and flex your writing muscles as you develop any kind of interactive, story-based adventure with any tools you have available. There will be a theme and some suggestions for those who are not certain about how they want to approach it. The result will be a short, story-based adventure to share with other participants. Nothing but an interest in interactive storytelling is required. Come out, write, and talk about story in games!

What: Interactive Storytelling Writeathon

When: Saturday, April 2nd, 11AM-8PM

Where: AL 211

What you get: A chance to try your hand at game writing with like-minded people and a completed story-based interactive adventure – or close to it – to showcase to friends and potential employers

What you need: An interest in interactive storytelling

Hope to see you there!

Paper Jam Review

March 7, 2011 Comments off

Another weekend has come and gone, and to compensate for the crappy weather the gods scheduled a Paper Jam this past Saturday. The day of hard work, conversation, and play-testing left the attendees exhausted from sheer awesomeness. Said awesomeness included quality conversation, one game completed and tested and more well on their way. Thank you to everyone who showed up! And thank you for Jonathan for providing a fun way to spend a rainy day!

For anyone who has a completed game: send us your rule-set, outline, and all other information and we will devote a page to displaying your name and your work for all to see!

For others: if struck with inspiration feel free to complete a game and send it to us. Otherwise: make sure to come by our next event!
